Copywriting isn’t as hard as people think.

Seriously, a few years back I thought that I needed to possess some wizard level writing ability in order to make any money writing copy for other people. I was wrong.

So wrong that over the past 4 years I’ve been working as a freelance copywriter, very part-time, and I’ve made about $70,000 so far. I’m also a fiverr pro rated seller, and have many repeat clients that love working with me.

So, yeah. Copywriting isn’t as hard as people think, and in this post I’m going to talk about 3 super easy copywriting tips that I think will be very helpful in growing an online copywriting business for yourself!

1. Write The Way You Talk

I can’t tell you how many times I read copy written by new copywriters that sounds so formal! I was guilty of this when I started as well. Writing formal, stuffy, boring copy for people. So unnatural and bland to read.

Instead, it helps to try writing the way that you talk.

The reality is that copywriters are hired to write copy that connects with people. Real living breathing people. People with jobs, kids, families, vices, addictions, hobbies. These are human beings we’re talking about.

Clients want copy that is so effective at tapping into the emotions of normal people that they end up buying something after reading it!

People like talking to people. So if you’re finding that your copy reads like it could double as the instruction manual for a toaster oven, try this out. Try writing whatever you’re writing as if you were speaking to someone about it. I find this has helped me get to a point where I’m writing copy that resonates well with my target audience more often, and my clients love reading it to.

2. Avoid Jargon and Buzzwords

For any of us who’ve worked in a corporate setting internal jargon or industry specific buzzwords can become part of the lingo required to do your job.

But as a copywriter, it’s very likely that the audience you’re writing for doesn’t have a clue or care in the world about what a “TPS Report” is!

So when writing copy, make sure you aren’t using any. Insider jargon or buzzwords might leave the person reading your copy confused. Even worse, it may make them feel like an outsider, which is probably the worst feeling you could put into your target audience as a copywriter.

Try rewording jargon and buzzwords in a way that anyone can understand. It’s going to help.

3. Stay In Your Comfort Zone

If you’re just starting out as a copywriter, it pays to stay in your comfort zone when it comes to the type of copy you’re trying to write for clients.

Like many things in life there are so many different categories of copywriting that you can specialize in. As a beginner, trying to be a jack of all trades sounds like a recipe for disaster.

It’s just not possible for you to master all forms of copywriting without putting a substantial amount of time into learning and practicing each.

For that reason, I always recommend staying in your comfort zone until you feel ready to move forward with new copywriting services.

Start by focusing on one form of copy. Learn it. Master it. Sell the hell out of it. When you feel you’ve got a handle on what you started with, pick another copywriting discipline to add to your arsenal.

That’s it for today! Feel free to hit me up on YouTube or Twitter for more helpful insights!
